Empathy
Empathy, Emotional Intelligence, The 5th Discipline, Personal Mastery, Knowing Yourself: Just What Does This Mean?
Research and experience shows the intelligence and skills related to information are of limited use if we don't manage the personal side of people working together. Daniel Goleman coined the term, Emotional Intelligence (EQ), as the ability to read, transmit to, and engage with other people.
The building foundations of EQ are optimism and resilience. Optimism is an attitude that buffers people against falling into apathy, hopelessness, cynicism or depression when the going gets tough. Resilience is the ability to stay in tune with the future in the face of setbacks.
These things can be learned. Firstly, by asking yourself several times a day: What am I feeling right now? What do I want in this situation / relationship? How am I acting? What do my senses / intuitions tell me? With responses to these questions, you learn to work with your emotions in constructive ways. Secondly there are relationship building skills; giving and receiving feedback, negotiating, expressing your feelings and your thinking.
People with empathy connect easily with others, are astute in reading their own and others reactions and feelings, and respond in ways that maintain and build their relationships. They lead and organize, and are confident in handling disputes… they can express the unspoken collective sentiment in groups, guiding the group towards it's goals. You'll know these people, they have a positive affect on others and if you take their title away, people still follow them.
