What's Working Well? - A Team Tip

It is too easy to focus on the negative - what is not working, that sometimes we lose sight of what is working well.

Here are five practices to assist you to tune into the positive:

  1. Catch me doing something right. Each week, write down 10 areas of your work that are working well, before focusing on the one or two areas that aren't. With your team, outline 3 or 4 areas that are working well, before you work on one that isn't.
  2. At the end of your working week, take 10 minutes, reflect on your week and jot down all the things you have achieved as your successes and achievements. Include everything: the big things and the small things.
  3. Begin each day with this brief focused meditation:
    • What am I excited about in my work?
    • What am I looking forward to today?
    • What am I proud of?
    • Who do I have a good working relationship with?
    • Who has a good working relationship with me?
  4. Say thank you to anyone who gives you something this week — regardless of what it is.
  5. Each day, give specific positive feedback to at least three people; e.g. someone in your team, your boss, and one of your peers in the organisation.
